Provenance
1. The attestation. 𓅜𓏤, from the tradition's own record. On record: Book of the Dead, Spell 61 (preventing the ba from being taken away), Book of the Dead, Spell 89 (causing the ba to be united to its body), Pyramid Texts, Utterance 263 (the king goes as an akh as lord of the horizon), Book of Caverns (transfiguration of the justified dead in the underworld).
2. The narrative record. The King Ascends as an Akh — In the Pyramid Texts, the oldest corpus of Egyptian religious literature, the king is repeatedly assured that he will ascend to the sky as an akh. Utterance 263 declares that he goes “as an akh, as lord of the horizon,” joining Re in his solar barque and taking his place among the circumpolar stars. The Transfiguration Spells — The Book of the Dead treats akh-hood as the corpus's goal-state. Spell 97 exists “for causing a man to be an akh in the realm of the dead”; Spell 130 gathers the disparate parts of the deceased's being into an effective akh with an eternal ba; and the rubrics of Spells 133 and 136A are “for making a spirit excellent” — in Egyptian, sꜣḫ, the causative of the very word ꜣḫ.
3. The physical record. The akh is attested in tomb inscriptions, coffin panels, and papyri from the Old Kingdom through the Ptolemaic period. Pyramid Texts utterances describe the king ascending as an akh to join the circumpolar stars, while New Kingdom Book of the Dead vignettes show the deceased leaving the tomb at dawn. Heart scarabs and amulets were deployed to protect the transformed spirit on its journey.
4. The current holding. The temple at /sites/akh/, classified Tier 1. The restoration preserves more than the ASCII form can express — stress, length, or a letter the Latin keyboard lost — which places it, mechanically, in Tier-1.
