AhuraMazdā: the stories first, then the spelling
The marks in AhuraMazdā make the most sense standing next to the myths they have to carry. So the myths come first.
The Stories That Carry the Name
The Call of Zarathustra. In the Gāthās, AhuraMazdā approaches Zarathustra and asks him to choose between the two primordial spirits: Spenta Mainyu, the holy creative spirit, and Angra Mainyu, the destructive spirit of the lie. Zarathustra chooses good thought, good words, and good deeds, becoming the prophet of the one wise lord. The myth is less a narrative than a summons: every person must make the same choice.
The Seven Creations and the Assault of Ahriman. In later Zoroastrian texts, AhuraMazdā creates the world in seven stages: sky, water, earth, plants, animals, humans, and fire. Angra Mainyu (Ahriman) responds by introducing drought, predators, disease, and death. The cosmos becomes a mixed battlefield in which good will ultimately triumph at Frashokereti, the making-fresh of the world.
Frashokereti, the Renovation. At the end of time, a savior named Saoshyant will arise, the dead will be resurrected, and humanity will pass through a river of molten metal that will feel like warm milk to the righteous. The lie and its creatures will be annihilated, and all beings will live forever in righteousness. This vision of cosmic renewal is one of Zoroastrianism's most distinctive contributions to world religion.
And Here Is What the Spelling Preserves
The restoration keeps one feature the ASCII form ahuramazda cannot show:
- a → ā — Macron: long a: how long the vowel is held.
A storyteller pronouncing the name would restore every one of them by instinct. The file only writes down what the voice already knows.

The Name Travels
Under the Achaemenid empire, AhuraMazdā was identified by Greeks and others with Zeus or the supreme sky god, and Persian kings dedicated monuments to him across their vast realm. In later Zoroastrian tradition he is paired with Angra Mainyu (Ahriman) in a dualistic opposition that some scholars trace back to Zarathustra's own teaching and others see as a later development.
The Address It Earned
The temple of AhuraMazdā stands at /sites/ahuramazda/ — lore, scholars, patterns — because a name carrying this much story deserves more than a parking page. The restoration preserves more than the ASCII form can express — stress, length, or a letter the Latin keyboard lost — which places it, mechanically, in Tier-1.
