1. The attestation. הֶבֶל, from the tradition's own record. On record: HALOT s.v. הֶבֶל, TDOT s.v. Abel, Genesis 4, Matthew 23:35; Luke 11:51; Hebrews 11:4; 12:24.
2. The preserved evidence. a → ā (Macron: long vowel) — absent from the ASCII form habel, present in the restoration, verifiable against the sources above.
3. The narrative record. The Favored Offering — Cain and Abel both bring offerings to the LORD. Cain brings fruit of the ground; Abel brings the firstborn of his flock and their fat portions. Murder in the Field — Cain speaks to Abel, and when they are in the field, Cain rises up and kills him. Abel does not resist, bargain, or flee.
4. The physical record. There is no archaeological evidence for Abel as an individual; his story belongs to the primeval cycle of Genesis. The pastoral way of life associated with him is well attested in the ancient Near East through zooarchaeological remains, rock art, and texts from Mesopotamia and the Levant. The contrast between farmers and herders that frames the Cain and Abel story reflects real tensions in early Near Eastern societies.
