How Monókerōs was rebuilt, mark by mark

Bench notes, Monókerōs: what we found, what we rejected, and what we finally set down. Kept in the open, because a restoration you cannot audit is just a spelling with confidence.

What We Found

The attestation, on the evidence Ctesias, Indika fr. 45 (= Photius, Bibliotheca cod. 72; cf. Aelian, De Natura Animalium 3.41) and Aristotle, Historia Animalium 2.1 (499b); Pliny, Natural History 8.30 set down: Μονόκερως. Meaning: "'Single-horned' (from μόνος + κέρας)".

The figure behind the name: The Greek tradition is zoological, not mythological: no hero fights the monokeros, no god rides it.

What the Name Carried In

Ktēsias of Knidos and the Indian Ass. The unicorn's birth certificate is a doctor's field report. Ktēsias of Knidos spent years at the Persian court of Artaxerxēs II as royal physician, and in his Indika — preserved for us in the epitome of Photius (Bibliotheca cod.

Aristotle's Verification. Aristotle took the report seriously enough to check its anatomy. In the History of Animals (2.

A spelling that has to carry stories like these is not a label. It is equipment.

Where It Stood Before Us

The unicorn's material trail begins not in Greece but in the Indus valley, where roughly two thousand steatite seals of the Mature Harappan period (c. 2600–1900 BCE) show a bovid in strict profile with a single projecting horn — almost certainly a bull read side-on, though the motif's monopoly on Indus glyptics has never been satisfactorily explained. The trail runs through Mesopotamian and Achaemenid one-horned art to the medieval narwhal-tusk trade, whose physical remains are the most honest unicorn evidence in existence: alicorn staffs and cups in European treasuries, all of them Arctic whale teeth. No certain ancient Greek image of Ktēsias' beast survives — the corpus of classical unicorn art begins, fittingly, with the medieval hunt. The bench inherits all of it — the web temple is the newest site, not the first.

What We Kept

The evidence, mark by mark — 2 features the keyboard form monokeros cannot hold:

What We Rejected

Any form invented for availability. The rule on the bench: if the evidence does not carry it, the domain does not get it — whatever the registrar has in stock.

What We Set Down

Monókerōs — Tier-1 is not a compliment; it is a measurement. This restoration keeps something the ASCII form provably loses, and the measurement is repeatable.

For the voice: mo-NO-keh-ross, stress on the antepenult, the epsilon of -ker- short and the final -ōs long.

The temple stands at /monokeros/ — the notes above are public in its Scholarly Edition, sources and all.

The File Continues

The temple's founding dispatch tells the name's story; its Resonance File reads the myths into the industries; the blog index holds the whole archive.

The Restoration Files are written from the same canonical record as the temples themselves: the lexicon, the lore catalog, the pattern atlas, and the cited scholarly sources. If a file ever disagrees with its temple, the temple is right — tell us, and the file will be corrected.
