The Cult
Izanagi's cult is the cult of purification, and its addresses are few and famous. Izanagi Jingū on Awaji Island — identified in local and medieval tradition with Onogoroshima, the first island — is his chief shrine, keeping the creation legend in the very geography the Kojiki names. Taga Taisha in Shiga Prefecture claims the site of the retirement palace to which he withdrew after begetting the three sovereign kami, and its medieval foundation document retells the creation as local sacred history. The Kojiki sets his cleansing at the river-mouth of Tachibana in Hyūga — the Miyazaki coast preserves the tradition — and from that scene descended Japan's most widespread rite: misogi, the ablutions still performed at every shrine basin and riverbank rite, the cleansing of a traveler come back from the land of the dead. No great festival calendar belongs to him; his ritual afterlife is written in water.
