Hiiaka's mythology is the longest continuous narrative in Hawaiian tradition: the Pele cycle, preserved in chant and family memory, in which the youngest volcano-goddess crosses every island on her sister's errand and comes home to a betrayal that splits the heavens' first family in two.

The Myth at Work
The Egg at ʻĀinahou. Pele's migration legend carries the volcano family westward from Kahiki — the Hawaiian name for Tahiti — until the goddess finds her home in the pit of Kīlauea. Beckwith's digest of the tradition (Hawaiian Mythology, 'The Pele cycle') preserves the birth of her youngest sister: at ʻĀinahou on Kauaʻi, Pele discovers an egg and takes it into her bosom to keep it warm; from the egg hatches the goddess whose name, Hiʻiaka, is traditionally explained as 'carried in the bosom' (Hawaiian hiʻi, to hold a child close; Pukui & Elbert, Hawaiian Dictionary). — remember the shape of that act. The Quest for Lohiʻau. Sleeping in the crater at Kīlauea, Pele sees in a dream the young chief Lohiʻau of Kauaʻi and falls in love with his image. Because she cannot leave her volcanic work without peril, she binds her youngest sister by an oath: Hiʻiaka must cross the islands, find Lohiʻau, and bring him back within forty days — and Hiʻiaka in turn binds Pele to guard her sacred lehua groves and her beloved friend Hopoe until she returns (Beckwith, Hawaiian Mythology; Emerson's Pele and Hiiaka, 1915, is the classic literary retelling of the cycle). — hold that image; the industries below are where it goes to work.

The Long Employment
Hālau hula across Hawaiʻi still open their practice with chants to Pele and Hiʻiaka, and the Merrie Monarch Festival's hula competition, founded in 1964 and held each spring in Hilo — the very coast of the sisters' battle — is the visible heart of her cult today. Place memory keeps her close: ʻĀinahou on Kauaʻi where the egg lay, the groves and shores of Puna where Hopoe danced. The age changed. The work did not.
