The Myth at Work
The Conception and Birth of Huitzilopōchtli. While Cōātlīcue was sweeping on the sacred mountain Coatepec — 'Serpent Mountain' — a ball of brilliant feathers drifted down from the sky, and she placed it in her bosom as she swept. By this sign she conceived, and when her pregnancy showed, her daughter Coyolxāuhqui, the Golden Bells, was shamed and enraged; she incited the Centzōn Huītznāhua, the Four Hundred Southerners, her brothers, to storm the mountain and kill their dishonoured mother. — remember the shape of that act. Coatepec at the Center of the World. The Mexica mapped the birth myth onto their capital with architectural precision. The Great Temple of Tenochtitlan was Coatepec: Huitzilopōchtli's shrine crowned its summit, and at the foot of his stairway lay the great carved disk of Coyolxāuhqui, eleven feet across, her dismembered limbs exactly where the myth said her brother threw them — at the base of the mountain, forever falling. — remember the shape of that act. The Long Employment
The monumental basalt statue of Cōātlīcue unearthed in Mexico City in 1790 — nearly eight feet of serpents, skull, and clawed feet — became one of the defining images of Aztec art and was displayed beside the Calendar Stone and the Stone of Tīzoc; she now stands in the National Museum of Anthropology as an emblem of Mesoamerican sacred power. The Templo Mayor excavations and the Coyolxāuhqui disk made her myth a public story again, taught in Mexican schools and staged in the Zócalo's Aztec dance revivals. The age changed. The work did not.
