The Cult
Bunjil's cult was the ceremonial life of the Kulin nations. As head of the eaglehawk moiety — half of the great eaglehawk-and-crow pairing that ordered marriage and kinship across central Victoria — he was present at every reckoning of identity. Custodians sang his songs at corroborees and at the great gatherings; initiation carried boys into knowledge of the creator's deeds; the Tanderrum ceremony welcomed visitors to country under ancestral authority. His principal sanctuary is Bunjil's Shelter in Gariwerd, where the ochre painting keeps his image on the rock, approached under protocols that persist today. Colonial suppression scattered the ceremonial calendar in the nineteenth century; since the late twentieth century Kulin communities have rebuilt public ceremony — Welcome to Country, smoking ritual, language song — explicitly in his name. The revival is real, and it is modern; the older cult lived in obligations now being re-learned.
