The Cult
No independent temple of ʾAṯiratu has been securely identified at Ugarit; her worship appears embedded in the royal and dynastic cult of the acropolis, where the queen mother and the goddess shared ritual space. The Keret epic records a vow at her Tyrian shrine, indicating a coastal sanctuary beyond Ugarit itself. Her title 'Lady of the Sea' and her role as intercessor suggest priestly activity connected to maritime rites and dynastic succession. The absence of a dedicated sanctuary in the excavated city reflects either the loss of evidence or a cult integrated with the palace and the high god ʾIlu.
