Athēnai: the stories first, then the spelling
The marks in Athēnai make the most sense standing next to the myths they have to carry. So the myths come first.
The Stories That Carry the Name
The Contest of Athena and Poseidon. Both gods claimed the land of Cecrops. Poseidon struck the rock of the Acropolis with his trident and a salt spring welled up — Apollodorus (3. 14.
Cecrops and the Autochthonous Kings. Cecrops, the first king of Athēnai, was said to be born from the earth itself — half-man, half-snake, a body that literally grew out of Attic soil (Apollodorus 3. 14. 1).
Erechtheus and the War for Attica. When Eumolpus, son of Poseidon, led the Eleusinians and a Thracian host against Attica, the oracle answered Erechtheus in Euripides' lost tragedy (Erechtheus, fr. 360 Nauck): the city would be saved only if one of his daughters died for it. The mother Praxithea's reply became the most quoted sentence of Athenian patriotism, preserved by Lycurgus (Against Leocrates 98–101): 'I hate women who prefer their children's survival to the common good.
And Here Is What the Spelling Preserves
Against those stories, the attestation: Ἀθῆναι, on the evidence Apollodorus, Bibliotheca 3.14–3.15 and Herodotus, Histories 8.55 set down. The name means "Of Athena".
The restoration keeps one feature the ASCII form athenai cannot show:
- e → ē — Eta: long epsilon: how long the vowel is held.
A storyteller pronouncing the name would restore every one of them by instinct. The file only writes down what the voice already knows.

Athēnai has been many cities in one. Roman visitors saw a Greek rival to be admired and plundered; the Roman forum at Athens and the Temple of Olympian Zeus testify to imperial cohabitation.
The Address It Earned
The temple of Athēnai stands at /athenai/ — lore, scholars, patterns — because a name carrying this much story deserves more than a parking page. The restoration preserves more than the ASCII form can express — stress, length, or a letter the Latin keyboard lost — which places it, mechanically, in Tier-1.
