The provenance file on Asía

Provenance record 060 · Asía · one temple, fully accounted for.

Provenance

1. The attestation. Ἀσία — "The eastern continent (possibly from Assuwa)".

2. The preserved evidence. i → í (Acute on iota) — absent from the ASCII form asia, present in the restoration, verifiable against the sources above.

3. The narrative record. Asia, Bride of Prometheus — Hesiod names Asia among the Oceanids, the three thousand daughters of Oceanus and Tethys (Theogony 357–367). The eponymy that makes her the wife of the Titan Prometheus belongs to Herodotus (4. The Continent That Took Her Name — Ancient Greeks explained the name of Asia through the woman. Herodotus, writing in the fifth century BCE, records the view that the continent was named for Prometheus's wife Asia, just as Europe was named for Europa and Libya for the daughter of Epaphus — and adds the Lydian counter-claim, that the land took its name from Asies, son of Cotys, son of Manes, a Lydian name (Herodotus 4.

4. The physical record. The earliest material witnesses to the name are Hittite: the tablets of the royal archives at Boğazköy-Hattusa in central Anatolia, datable to the fifteenth–fourteenth centuries BCE, record campaigns of the early kings against the league of Aššuwa in the far west — the older stratum of the word that Greek Asia most probably continues. The tablets themselves, excavated from the early twentieth century onward, are held in the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations (Ankara), the Istanbul Archaeological Museums, and the site museum at Boğazköy. The mythic Asia leaves no cult site — Oceanids were not worshipped — but her later namesake is monumental: Pergamon, seat of the Attalid kings whose bequest created the Roman province, crowned by the Great Altar of Zeus (now in Berlin), and the provincial coinage that first stamped 'ASIA' as a personified figure onto money.

5. The current holding. The temple at /asia/, classified Tier 1. The restoration preserves more than the ASCII form can express — stress, length, or a letter the Latin keyboard lost — which places it, mechanically, in Tier-1.

6. The documented resonances. Travel, Tourism & Place Branding, Mapping & Geospatial, Ancestry & Heritage Services — seats argued and weighted in the pattern atlas, read through the myths in this temple's Resonance File.

7. The continuing record. Asía's legacy is the map itself. Her name designates the planet's largest continent and its majority population, in forms descended from the Greek through Latin and every European vernacular — yet the boundary between 'Europe' and 'Asia' has been drawn along rivers, seas, mountains, and religious frontiers without ever settling, which is itself a legacy of the myth: a continent named for a bride remains, in practice, a definition argued over.

The Restoration Files are written from the same canonical record as the temples themselves: the lexicon, the lore catalog, the pattern atlas, and the cited scholarly sources. If a file ever disagrees with its temple, the temple is right — tell us, and the file will be corrected.
