How Arete was rebuilt, mark by mark
From the restoration bench — the working notes on Arete, kept because the process is the proof.
What We Found
The attestation, as Xenophon, Memorabilia 2.1.21-34 (Prodicus' allegory) and Homer, Odyssey 7.53-77 (Arete, queen of the Phaeacians) preserve it: Ἀρετή. Meaning: "Excellence, virtue".
The figure behind the name: Arete is more concept than character, but Greek mythology dramatised her in one famous scene: Prodicus' allegory of Heracles at the crossroads.
What the Name Carried In

Arete in the Odyssey. In the Odyssey 7. 53–77, Arete is also a queen — the wife of Alcinous, ruler of the seafaring Phaeacians, and daughter of his brother Rhexenor.
A spelling that has to carry stories like these is not a label. It is equipment.
Where It Stood Before Us
Personified Arete enters Greek art in the later fifth century BCE — a draped woman labelled ΑΡΕΤΗ on Attic and South Italian vases — and the Romans minted her counterpart Virtus on imperial coinage, the standing female with spear and shield. The Choice of Heracles became a favorite of Roman floor mosaicists: surviving examples from Antioch and the western empire (second–third century CE) show the two women flanking the hero, Arete with her hand raised in argument — the sophist’s debate staged in household stone. On the Greek mainland the word itself is the monument: honorific decrees and epitaphs across the Aegean praise individuals “for their aretē,” so the abstraction survives less in temples than in thousands of inscribed stones. Arete’s civic shrine is lexical — the culture agreed with Aristotle that the city exists to make excellence possible. The bench inherits all of it — the web temple is the newest site, not the first.
What We Rejected
arete as the primary form. It survives as the convenience it is; it does not get to lead. The hierarchy is full restoration first, and this name can afford to stand at the top of it.
What We Set Down
Arete — What survives here cannot be shown in ASCII: a feature of the original that the fallback alphabet flattens. That is the Tier-1 test, and this name passes it without argument.
For the voice: 'ah-ray-TAY' — the final syllable carries the pitch and is long; the middle vowel is also long.
The temple stands at /arete/ — the notes above are public in its Scholarly Edition, sources and all.
