How Arete was rebuilt, mark by mark
From the restoration bench — the working notes on Arete, kept because the process is the proof.
What We Found
The attestation, as Xenophon, Memorabilia 2.1.21-34 (Prodicus' allegory) and Homer, Odyssey 7.53-77 (Arete, queen of the Phaeacians) preserve it: Ἀρετή. Meaning: "Excellence, virtue".
The figure behind the name: Arete is more concept than character, but Greek mythology dramatised her in one famous scene: Prodicus' allegory of Heracles at the crossroads.
What the Name Carried In
Heracles at the Crossroads. In the sophist Prodicus' tale, preserved by Xenophon, the young Heracles meets two women. One is beautiful, modest, and dressed in white: Arete.
Arete in the Odyssey. In the Odyssey, Arete is also the name of the queen of the Phaeacians, wife of Alcinous. She is wise, honoured, and consulted by her people.
A spelling that has to carry stories like these is not a label. It is equipment.
What We Rejected
arete as the primary form. It survives as the convenience it is; it does not get to lead. The hierarchy is full restoration first, and this name can afford to stand at the top of it.
What We Set Down
Arete — What survives here cannot be shown in ASCII: a feature of the original that the fallback alphabet flattens. That is the Tier-1 test, and this name passes it without argument.
For the voice: 'ah-ray-TAY' — the final syllable carries the pitch and is long; the middle vowel is also long.

This restoration belongs to Greek, a tradition that invented both the chorus and the critique. The rules that govern it are not house style; they are the tradition's own scholarship, applied with the same care here as in any edition — and published, with the sources, so the file can be checked the way an edition can be checked.
