The provenance file on Aḗr

Catalogue entry — Aḗr. Every claim below carries its chain of custody.

Provenance

1. The attestation. Ἀήρ — "Air, mist". On record: LSJ, Beekes, Etymological Dictionary of Greek, Anaximenes, fragments (DK 13 B2), Aristotle, On the Heavens 3.3; Meteorology.

2. The narrative record. Aēr and Aithēr — Homer already divides the sky in two. Aēr is the lower air, the misty, breathable region where mortals live and fight; aithēr is the bright, pure upper air where the gods dwell and where the stars are set. Air as the Arche — Anaximenes of Miletus, writing around the middle of the sixth century BCE, made a bold and simple proposal: aēr is the archē — the single stuff from which everything else comes. 'As our soul,' he is reported to have said, 'which is air, holds us together, so do breath and air surround the whole cosmos' (fr.

3. The physical record. Aḗr has no cult sites, but its material trace is atmospheric and technological: ancient wind-towers, the pneumatic devices described by Hero of Alexandria, and the slow development of meteorology from sign-lore to science. The concept shaped Greek architecture, medicine, and philosophy, leaving its mark in texts rather than temples — fitting for an element whose temple is everywhere.

4. The current holding. The temple at /aer/, classified Tier 1. What survives here cannot be shown in ASCII: a feature of the original that the fallback alphabet flattens. That is the Tier-1 test, and this name passes it without argument.

5. The documented resonances. Aviation & Aerospace, Environmental & Climate Services, Meteorology & Weather Intelligence — seats argued and weighted in the pattern atlas, read through the myths in this temple's Resonance File.

6. The primary sources. Theogony, Homeric Hymns, Works and Days — the library this file answers to, open at the Sacred Texts collection.

7. The continuing record. Aḗr is so ordinary that we forget it is sacred: every breath is a gift of atmosphere. The word survives in 'air,' 'aerial,' 'aerodynamics,' and 'aerospace.

The Restoration Files are written from the same canonical record as the temples themselves: the lexicon, the lore catalog, the pattern atlas, and the cited scholarly sources. If a file ever disagrees with its temple, the temple is right — tell us, and the file will be corrected.
