Homeric Greek Ἀχιλλεύς scans with a short i and a stressed final syllable; the geminate λλ is attested in the best manuscripts beside the single-λ variant Ἀχιλεύς. The restoration Achilleús keeps the acute on the final syllable exactly where the Greek puts it. In the epic hexameter the name scans ⏑ – —: a short first alpha followed by two long syllables, and that short first syllable is precisely why the single-λ variant Ἀχιλεύς exists.
