The provenance file on Hāḇel
The provenance file for Hāḇel. Nothing here is unsourced; that is what the file is for.
Provenance
1. The attestation. הֶבֶל, from the tradition's own record. On record: HALOT s.v. הֶבֶל, TDOT s.v. Abel, Genesis 4; Jubilees 4:1–12; Josephus, Antiquities 1.52, Matthew 23:35; Luke 11:51; Hebrews 11:4; 12:24.
2. The preserved evidence. a → ā (Macron: long vowel) — absent from the ASCII form habel, present in the restoration, verifiable against the sources above.
3. The narrative record. The Favored Offering — The story occupies nine verses of Genesis 4. Two brothers work the same valley: Cain tills the soil, Abel keeps sheep. Murder in the Field — 'Cain spoke to Abel his brother. And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him' (Genesis 4:8).
4. The physical record. There is no archaeological evidence for Abel as an individual; his story belongs to the primeval cycle of Genesis. The pastoral way of life associated with him is well attested in the ancient Near East through zooarchaeological remains, rock art, and texts from Mesopotamia and the Levant. The contrast between farmers and herders that frames the Cain and Abel story reflects real tensions in early Near Eastern societies.
5. The current holding. The temple at /abel/, classified Tier 1. Tier-1 is not a compliment; it is a measurement. This restoration keeps something the ASCII form provably loses, and the measurement is repeatable.
6. The documented resonances. Faith & Spiritual Organizations, Funerary & Memorial Services, Mental Health & Emotional Wellness — seats argued and weighted in the pattern atlas, read through the myths in this temple's Resonance File.
7. The primary sources. Enūma Eliš — the library this file answers to, open at the Sacred Texts collection.
8. The continuing record. Hāḇel is the archetype of the innocent victim. His name has named countless characters in literature and film who suffer for their goodness, and the phrase 'Cain and Abel' has become a shorthand for any fatal rivalry between brothers.
