The Cult
Yamunā's cult is a river cult: the water itself is the goddess. Pilgrims bathe at Yamunotri, her glacial source in the Garhwal Himalaya, where a small temple and hot springs mark the tirtha. Downstream, Mathurā and Vṛndāvana are her domestic realm; Vishram Ghāt is the place where Kṛṣṇa rested after slaying Kaṃsa, and every morning's āratī turns the ghāts into a theater of devotion. The confluence with the Gaṅgā at Prayāgrāj, marked by the akṣayavaṭa tree and the fortress, draws millions during the Kumbha melā. Offerings of floating lamps, flower garlands, and tulsi leaves accompany vows to the dark river.
