The Cult
Týchē's cult expanded dramatically from the Hellenistic period, when cities began to personify their fortune as a civic goddess. Antioch on the Orontes erected the famous Tyche of Eutychides, and similar civic cults spread across the Greek East. At Praeneste in Italy, the vast sanctuary of Fortuna Primigenia—terraced up a mountainside and rediscovered after World War II—shows how Greek Tyche merged with Italic Fortuna to become one of the most popular cults of the Roman Republic and Empire. Votive dedications to Tyche/Fortuna were common in port cities, on battlefields, and in households.
