How Sarasvatī was rebuilt, mark by mark
The workshop file for Sarasvatī. Every rejected form is recorded here too — that is the point of keeping notes.
What We Found
The attestation runs through the tradition's own sources: सरस्वती. Meaning: "The goddess of eloquence and learning — river of sacred speech (saras 'flowing water' + vatī 'possessing')".
The figure behind the name: Sarasvatī's double biography — river first, word second — is the oldest story of how a landscape becomes a mind.
What the Name Carried In
Mightiest of Streams. The Ṛgveda hymns her as a river "surpassing all others in might": pure in her course from the mountains to the sea, mother of waters, destroyer of the Pārāvata foes. The Nadīstuti ("hymn to the rivers") names her between the Yamunā and the Śutudrī — the heartland stream of the Vedic people, invoked for wealth, descendants, and wisdom in one breath.
Vāk Speaks. Ṛgveda 10. 125 is her own voice: "I move with the Rudras, the Vasus, the Ādityas; I uphold Mitra and Varuṇa, Indra and Agni, the twin Aśvins.
A spelling that has to carry stories like these is not a label. It is equipment.
Where It Stood Before Us
The Ghaggar-Hakra dry channels between the Yamunā and the Indus — traced by satellite (Landsat imagery of buried paleochannels) and drilled by the Geological Survey of India — are the standard candidates for the Vedic river; Harappan sites (Kalibangan, Banawali) line their banks in densities the Indus itself cannot match. Her temples are comparatively few for so great a goddess — the Sharada Peeth in Kashmir (now across the LoC), Sringeri's Sharadamba, Basara's Gnana Saraswati in Telangana, and Pushkar's shrine — because her true temple has always been the school and the library. The bench inherits all of it — the web temple is the newest site, not the first.
What We Kept
The evidence, mark by mark — 1 feature the keyboard form saraswati cannot hold:
- i → ī — Macron: long /iː/. Kept.
What We Rejected
The plain ASCII saraswati — admissible as a fallback, never as the primary. A wrong accent would have been worse: the rulebook is explicit that a misplaced mark is worse than none.
What We Set Down
Sarasvatī — The restoration preserves more than the ASCII form can express — stress, length, or a letter the Latin keyboard lost — which places it, mechanically, in Tier-1.
For the voice: sah-RAH-swah-tee — the final ī long, the v soft as in verse.
The temple stands at /sites/saraswati/ — the notes above are public in its Scholarly Edition, sources and all.
