Pḗgasos bears a name that is probably not Greek at all: scholars connect it to the Luwian storm god pihassas, carried into Greek myth through Anatolian contact. The folk etymology from πηγή, "spring," was already popular in antiquity — the horse who stamps springs from the rock. Attic inscriptions spell the name with the long ē of the first syllable — the quantity the restoration keeps.
