Provenance
1. The attestation. 𒀭𒂗𒆤, from the tradition's own record. On record: ETCSL, CAD, AHw, Black & Green, Gods, Demons and Symbols of Ancient Mesopotamia.
2. The preserved evidence. i → ī (Macron: a visible question mark — the length of Enlil's second vowel is discussable, not certain) — absent from the ASCII form enlil, present in the restoration, verifiable against the sources above.
3. The narrative record. Enlīl and Ninlil — The myth Enlīl and Ninlil tells how the young god was banished from Nippur for impregnating Ninlil by the canal. In the Underworld he meets her three times in disguise — as the gatekeeper, the river-man, and the ferryman — begetting three underworld deities: Nergal, Ninazu, and Enbilulu. Enlīl Sends the Deluge — In Atrahasis, the human race has grown too noisy and disturbed Enlīl's sleep. He persuades the divine council to send a flood to wipe them out.
4. The physical record. The Ekur sanctuary at Nippur — excavated by the University of Pennsylvania and later Iraqi teams — remains the central archaeological witness to Enlīl's cult. Its mud-brick ziggurat, temple platform, and surrounding tablet house yielded thousands of Sumerian hymns, royal inscriptions, and school texts invoking Enlīl as king of gods. Votive statuettes and foundation figurines from the site name him as the grantor of kingship to Ur-Nammu, Shulgi, and later Mesopotamian rulers.
5. The current holding. The temple at /sites/enlil/, classified Tier 1. Tier-1 is not a compliment; it is a measurement. This restoration keeps something the ASCII form provably loses, and the measurement is repeatable.
