The Cult
No organized city cult of the Sirens is attested; they were figures of myth, tomb imagery, and perilous seascape rather than recipients of regular sacrifice. South Italian funerary art, however, made them psychopomps and musicians of the dead, carving them on tombs in Campania and Apulia as mourning escorts. Their imagined island, with its bones of sailors, belonged to sailors' lore, and they appear in ritual contexts mainly as creatures to be ritually countered or invoked in necromantic and chthonic settings. The evidence is iconographic and funerary, not civic.
