The Cult
Ōkuninushi remains one of the most actively venerated kami in Japan, centred on Izumo-taisha in Shimane Prefecture, where the great shrine claims to enshrine him as ruler of the unseen world. The medieval high pillars of the main hall, confirmed by 2000 excavations, testify to the antiquity and wealth of the cult. Annual rituals include Kami-arai, the welcoming of the myriad kami to Izumo in the tenth lunar month, and countless branch shrines across Japan invoke him as a god of marriage, healing, and nation-building. Modern couples still travel to Izumo to pray for good unions, and the shrine's grand reconstruction cycle every sixty years keeps his cult materially present in national life.
