The provenance file on Hygíeia

The provenance file for Hygíeia. Nothing here is unsourced; that is what the file is for.

Provenance

1. The attestation. Ὑγίεια — "Health, soundness; personified as the goddess of health and cleanliness". On record: LSJ, Beekes, Etymological Dictionary of Greek, Hesiod, Works and Days, Pausanias, Description of Greece.

2. The preserved evidence. i → í (Acute on iota) — absent from the ASCII form hygieia, present in the restoration, verifiable against the sources above.

3. The narrative record. Health First of Blessings — A hexameter line transmitted under Hesiod's name — the so-called Hygieia fragment — declares that health ranks first among mortal goods, since neither wealth nor pleasure can be enjoyed by the sick (pseudo-Hesiod, fr. 278 West, cited already in antiquity). Daughter of Asklepios — In the great healing sanctuaries, Hygíeia was worshipped beside her father Asklepios, her sister Panakeia, and the little hooded Telesphoros. At Epidauros, the iamata — the inscribed miracle records — thank the family for cures of lameness, blindness, and dropsy achieved through incubation: the patient sleeping in the abaton, dreaming of snakes, waking whole (IG IV² 1).

4. The physical record. Hygíeia was worshipped at major Asklepieia including Epidauros, Athens, Kos, and Pergamon. Votive reliefs show her standing beside Asklepios with a snake or bowl. The Athenian Asklepieion on the south slope of the Acropolis and the great sanctuary at Epidauros yield numerous dedications naming her. Statues of Hygieia were common in Roman villas and public baths.

5. The current holding. The temple at /hygieia/, classified Tier 1. Tier-1 is not a compliment; it is a measurement. This restoration keeps something the ASCII form provably loses, and the measurement is repeatable.

6. The documented resonances. Healthcare, Pharma & Medicine, Mental Health & Emotional Wellness, Beauty, Fashion & Cosmetics — seats argued and weighted in the pattern atlas, read through the myths in this temple's Resonance File.

7. The primary sources. Theogony, Homeric Hymns, Works and Days — the library this file answers to, open at the Sacred Texts collection.

8. The continuing record. Hygíeia is perhaps the most immediately useful Greek goddess in modern life: her name labels hand-washing, sanitation, and public health. The COVID-19 pandemic returned her to prominence as populations relearned the ancient truth that prevention is divine.

The Restoration Files are written from the same canonical record as the temples themselves: the lexicon, the lore catalog, the pattern atlas, and the cited scholarly sources. If a file ever disagrees with its temple, the temple is right — tell us, and the file will be corrected.
