Why Helénē is spelled that way — and what it costs to get it right
There is a version of this name the early internet had to settle for: helene. This is the file on how Helénē replaced it.
Helénē's story is told by Homer, Hesiod, Stesichorus, Euripides, and Herodotus — and the tradition argues with itself at every turn: abduction or seduction, guilt or phantom, goddess or woman. She is the most examined face in Greek myth.

The Name Before the Marks
The name is attested as Ἑλένη, in the attestation Homer, Iliad 3, 6, 24; Odyssey 4 and Hesiod, Catalogue of Women frs. 23a, 197-198 (Merkelbach-West) give us. On the evidence, it means "Probably pre-Greek; folk-linked to ἑλένη 'torch'".

None of these marks is decoration. Each one is a fact about how the name was spoken, and each one is checkable against the scholarly record the temple cites.
Spoken, the name runs `/helénɛː/` — 'heh-LEH-nay' — three syllables, the high note on the middle, and the final vowel long; nothing like the two-beat English 'HEH-len.'
The Temple That Stands Now
The restored name is not a plaque; it is an address. The temple of Helénē lives at /helene/, with its mythology in the lore halls, its peer-reviewed record in the Scholarly Edition, and its place in the pattern atlas on the patterns floor.
What survives here cannot be shown in ASCII: a feature of the original that the fallback alphabet flattens. That is the Tier-1 test, and this name passes it without argument.
Where the Name Stood First
The cult at Therapne is archaeologically secure: excavations at the Menelaion (first by the British School in 1900, decisively by H. W. Catling in the 1970s) uncovered a Mycenaean mansion beneath the Archaic-Classical shrine, with votive offerings — bronze and terracotta figurines, plaques, jewelry — addressed to Menelaus and Helen from the seventh century BCE onward, confirming the paired heroön Isocrates and Pausanias describe. The Rhodian cult of Helen Dendritis is attested textually rather than excavated. In art, Attic vase-painters of the late sixth and fifth centuries BCE made the recovery-scene a favorite: Menelaus dropping his sword at the sight of Helen among Troy's ruins (the circle of the so-called Menelaus Painter). Her 'Troy' itself — Hisarlik, excavated by Schliemann and Blegen — supplies the landscape of the legend, whatever one thinks of its historicity; the burned layers of Troy VIIa remain the war's only possible material witness. The temple on the web is the newest of these addresses — the first one that fits in a pocket.
