Gaurī is the Great Goddess at her most benevolent: the golden-skinned Mother whose austerity won Śiva himself, whose festivals celebrate marriage and motherhood. Her name — "the radiant one" — in the Ṛgveda simply means a female gaura, the wild ox; the goddess's first secure appearance comes later, as the Kena Upaniṣad's Umā.
