1. The attestation. CLEMENTIA, from the tradition's own record. On record: Seneca, De Clementia, Cicero, Pro Marcello and Pro Ligario, Oxford Latin Dictionary, s.v. clementia, Lewis and Short, A Latin Dictionary, s.v. clementia.
2. The narrative record. The Clemency of Caesar — Julius Caesar made clementia a central virtue of his public image. After defeating his enemies in the civil war, he famously pardoned many of them, including Brutus and Cicero. Clementia Augusti — Under the empire, Clementia became an official virtue of the emperor. Coins and inscriptions proclaimed the Clementia Augusti, the mercy of Augustus and his successors.
