Provenance

1. The attestation. CLEMENTIA, from the tradition's own record. On record: Seneca, De Clementia, Cicero, Pro Marcello and Pro Ligario, Oxford Latin Dictionary, s.v. clementia, Lewis and Short, A Latin Dictionary, s.v. clementia.

2. The narrative record. The Clemency of Caesar — Julius Caesar made clementia the signature of his dictatorship. Through the civil war of 49–45 BCE he pardoned one defeated enemy after another — Cicero, Ligarius, the consular Marcellus, and at last Brutus and Cassius themselves, whom he admitted to office. Clementia Augusti — The emperors inherited the gesture and made it a system. Under Nero the mint of Rome struck sestertii and dupondii showing Clementia as a standing woman, patera in hand, pouring a libation over an altar — legend CLEMENTIA AVGVSTI — and the type recurs across the coinage of the first two centuries.

3. The physical record. Clementia's monuments are numismatic above all. Nero's sestertii and dupondii of 64–66 CE show her standing with patera and cornucopia before a lighted altar, legend CLEMENTIA AVGVSTI S C, among the most beautiful personifications on Roman coinage; later emperors revived the type whenever they needed the message. In stone, a Temple of Clementia Caesaris stood at Rome, voted by the senate in 45 BCE in Caesar's honor, with the dictator's own statue installed as the goddess's image — a shrine that was also, his enemies noted, a claim to divinity on the republic's own ground. No certain remains of the temple have been identified. Personified virtues in general crowded imperial art — on the Ara Pacis, in the Forum of Nerva, on gems and cameos — but Clementia's own dossier is bronze and silver: the empire's most widely circulated theology.

4. The current holding. The temple at /clementia/, classified Tier 2. Tier-2 here means one preserved truth — not less important, just singular. The temple shows it and names it.
