Anima is the Latin word for breath, air, and — by extension — the soul or life-force that animates a living body. It names one of the most ancient equations in Western thought: that the difference between a corpse and a living person is the presence of breath. From this simple observation Latin developed a rich vocabulary of animation, soul, and spirit that still shapes modern psychology, religion, and biology.
