From ancient cult to modern Unicode
Dêlos is the smallest great place in Greek religion: a bare rock of three square miles that became the holiest island in the Aegean — the birthplace of Apóllōn and Ártemis — and then, by a turn of history, the busiest free port of the Hellenistic world.
Rome read Dêlos through commerce as much as cult: declared a free port in 166 BCE to undercut Rhodes, it became the clearing-house of the eastern Mediterranean, famous — and infamous — for a slave market that Strabo says could receive and dispatch ten thousand slaves in a day. Italian bankers, Syrian merchants, and Egyptian cult associations all built clubhouses there, making late Dêlos the most cosmopolitan town of its century.
